Major League Baseball Players Trust presents $10,000 for at-risk youth in Pittsburgh

The Major League Baseball Players Trust has awarded a $10,000 grant to Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania to enhance services for at-risk youth in Pittsburgh.  All of Us Care, a program of Volunteers of America, will use the funds for a significant computer lab upgrade at its office in Sharpsburg.

Volunteers of America and the Major League Baseball Players Trust have been partners since 2002, working together in cities nationwide to encourage young people to get involved in their communities by volunteering.  A total of $430,000 has been provided by the Major League Baseball Players Trust to dozens of Volunteers of America programs since the first grants were given 2003.

All of Us Care provides a variety of out-of-school activities and services to more than 1,000 youth 5-21 years-old each year. Many of the youth participants do not have access to home computers, according to J. Patrick Serey, Chief Development and Marketing Officer of Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania.  The grant will enable the nonprofit organization to purchase additional desktop computers and work stations for students to do supervised homework, research and interactive learning.

“This grant from the Major League Baseball Players Trust is a home run for the educational needs of our community’s youth,” said Serey.  “With the closing of the local library in Sharpsburg, many students do not have internet access.  Our program provides safe access to educational and recreational activities.”

Currently, the computer lab serves approximately 200 students who are limited to one hour sessions, added Serey.  By expanding the lab area and adding more computers, All of Us Care will serve fifty percent more students for longer periods of time.  “The expansion will allow us to offer more programs, including the instruction of computer maintenance and repairs.  Plus, older adults will be able to use the lab during the day while the children are in school.”

In Pennsylvania, Volunteers of America provides services including but not limited to a child development center, foster care, emergency services, thrift stores, affordable housing for the elderly, supportive living for adults with chronic mental illness, pregnancy counseling, housing and training for homeless young adults, and a transportation program for the elderly and those with disabilities, as well as facilitates domestic and international adoptions.
