Volunteers have played a vital role throughout Volunteers of America’s 115-year history.  Today, they continue to provide significant support to our organization’s mission.

After reading an article about volunteering, Betty Miller responded to serve her community.  That was in 2002—and she has been an active volunteer ever since!

Each year, she sorts thousands of Scholastic books which are distributed free to underprivileged children by Volunteers of America.  Betty, a keen advocate for literacy, also enjoys handing out the books at various events.

In addition, she helps with our annual holiday toy drive and party for disadvantaged             youngsters.  Volunteers of America collects new toys to give hope and joy to children who desperately need it.  “It’s all worth the time and energy when you see the children’s reactions as they receive new toys,” Miller said.

Alan R. Garner, president and CEO of Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania said, “The number of Americans in need has increased.  We provide volunteers with opportunities to help others who are struggling day to day to survive.  Volunteering is an excellent way for people to become engaged in their own communities—especially during the holidays.”

Giving back to the community happens at all levels, at all ages.  It is a personally rewarding experience to help others.  For example, college students will spend a day of community service at a Volunteers of America Thrift Store, sorting donated clothes, household items and many other useful items.

Volunteers also help with special events, mentor youth, collect school backpacks or provide the gifts of time, talent and leadership.

Join with us to uplift others in need and stand on their own.  Learn how you can get involved at www.voapa.org!
