Volunteers of America kicks off annual toy drive for needy children

Volunteers of America has launched its annual Toy Drive with the delivery of its toy collection boxes to Central Pennsylvania companies, schools, civic groups and service organizations.

Through the support of many local groups, churches and businesses, hundreds of deserving children in Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry Counties will enjoy a brighter holiday, according to Alan R. Garner, president and CEO of Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania.

“The current economic crisis will create a hardship for many disadvantaged families. Our goal is to collect about 2,500 toys this fall to serve an estimated 800 children at Christmas,” explained Garner.

Individuals can place new, unwrapped toys in the special Volunteers of America toy collection box at numerous host locations throughout the area. To find the closest collection site or to request a toy collection box, call 717-236-1440.

Toys can be dropped off at the Volunteers of America Thrift Store, 2550 Paxton Street, Harrisburg,  the Volunteers of America Thrift Store on the Carlisle Pike at Silver Spring Road, Mechanicsburg, or the Volunteer of America office, 2112 Walnut Street, Harrisburg.

Individuals, organizations and businesses can also make a monetary donation to support the Toy Drive, which has been a Volunteers of America tradition for more than 80 years in Central Pennsylvania. Contributions will be used to purchase toys.
