Volunteers of America Thrift Store to open in Harrisburg
Thrifty Shoppers looking for holiday bargains

Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania will celebrate the grand opening of its new thrift store from Wednesday, December 10 through Sunday, December 14. Located at 2550 Paxton Street in Harrisburg, the store will offer a large inventory of new and gently used merchandise for the entire family.

To kick off the grand opening on December 10, the first 100 customers will receive a free $20 Gift Card.

The Thrift Store will offer daily specials, including a 50% off sale on all clothing and selected household items every Monday. In addition, everything in the store will be half price the last Wednesday of each month.

The daily specials are also valid at the Volunteers of America Thrift Store on the Carlisle Pike at Silver Spring Rd. in Mechanicsburg.   Hours for both stores are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays, Noon to 5 p.m.

Whether shopping for name-brand clothing, furniture, collectibles or gifts for the holidays, customers will find a large selection of quality merchandise, said Dave Garlinger, Jr., director of retail operations. More than 2,000 new items will be added to the floor each day.

“We sell donated clothing, furniture, appliances and household goods at very low prices,” added Garlinger. “With an ever-changing inventory, many shoppers return on a weekly basis to look for hidden treasures as well as basic necessities.”

The store will feature contemporary styles of clothes, shoes and accessories, Garlinger pointed out. “It’s an ideal place to shop for the whole family. We have racks and racks of clothing for children, teens, men and women. Shoppers will find everything from toys for kids to large-print books for older adults.”

All revenues from the stores help support more than 20 human service programs in Pennsylvania. In addition, the Volunteers of America Thrift Stores also support the organization’s mission by providing help to people in emergency situations. When tragedy or disaster strikes, the organization provides free clothing to individuals and families facing a crisis. Based on referrals from churches and social service agencies, people in need are given vouchers to use in the stores.

The stores are stocked with merchandise donated by generous area residents and businesses. Donations of clothing, electronics, appliances, cookware and gently used furniture, including bedding and linens, are especially needed. Items can be dropped off at either store, or free pick-up can be arranged by calling 717-766-2999.
