Books-to-You — Statewide

The excitement of discovery through reading is nurtured through Volunteers of America’s partnership with Scholastic, Inc.  The nationally known publisher provides books each year for Volunteers of America to distribute free to children in need.

Based on referrals from churches and social service agencies, Volunteers of America provides free clothing and furniture to individuals and families in emergency situations.  This includes people suffering the tragedy of a house fire, flood or other disaster, victims of domestic abuse and others with critical needs and no resources.

Toys donated from businesses, organizations and individuals are given to underserved children at Christmas.

 

Capitol Egg Hunt - Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Each year since 1937, Volunteers of America has held the Capitol Egg Hunt, an Easter egg hunt on the grounds of the state capitol for the children of Harrisburg.  For event information, call 717-236-1440.

 

Children's Holiday Toy Party - Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

For approximately 80 years, donated new toys are given to needy children at Christmas.  Chidren are recommended by school teachers to receive toys, food and candy.  The Toy Party offers fun activities and Christmas season entertainment to delight every children.

 

A.B.A.T.E. Toy Run - Allentown, Pennsylvania

Beginning in 1984, the A.B.A.T.E.'s annual November toy run now brings more than 1,000 motorcyles and their riders together in a ride to Volunteers of America's Children's Center to deliver toyhs to the children and their families.

 

Thrift Stores

Clothing, furniture, appliances and household good at traditional thrift store prices. Community encouraged to shop, donate items and volunteer. Proceeds provide financial support for out programs.

In partnership with the Department of Public Welfare and the Luzerne County Workforce Investment Development Agency, work appropriate clothing is given to help individuals transitioning back into the workforce.
