The Garrrahan Street Residence, in Hanover Township, provides permanent housing for young adults ages 18 to 25 years of age. The residence was purchased in 2006 as a result of an identified priority need in the Wyoming Valley.
Initially purchased with funding from Luzerne County, Volunteers of America invested more than $30,000 to improve the property with new bathrooms, new carpeting and fresh paint.
It is a duplex structure that has two 2-bedroom apartments. Each apartment houses two individuals who have private bedrooms but share common areas such as kitchen, dining room, living room and bathroom.
The residence is located in a quiet residential neighborhood and is serviced by public transportation and within walking distance to many amenities such as shopping and restaurants.
The goal of the residence is to provide safe, affordable housing for young adults who are struggling and at risk for homelessness. By offering affordable rent, the residents can begin to build stability in their lives. Residents are also encouraged to avail themselves of existing community resources such as job training, educational opportunities, counseling, recreation, and others.
Potential residents may be referred by a human services agency, by an individual or by self referral. Residents lease their apartment through a lease agreement with Volunteers of America and are required to pay up to 30 percent of their income or a minimum of $200 per month, which includes all utilities.
Individuals interested in residing at the Garrahan Street Residence must meet low income guidelines and undergo both child abuse and criminal background checks to be eligible.
