Caring Alternatives Pregnancy Counseling - Wilkes-Barre

Women of any age who face an unplanned pregnancy can find a warm, open environment in our Caring Alternatives program in Wilkes-Barre. Caring Alternatives provides counseling in parenting skills, prenatal health, home health and safety and an array of information and training for new mothers.

The impact of ever-increasing food, energy and housing prices continuing to rise is daunting to most families. For low income families, it's not only devastating; it can be dangerous - especially to the littlest, most vulnerable children.

At our Wilkes-Barre office, Volunteers of America has seen a sharp increase in the number of single moms and families with infant children seeking help from our Caring Alternatives Pantry. The pantry is a key component of our Caring Alternatives Pregnancy Counseling program and offers formula, diapers, hygiene items, clothing and other necessities for families in need.

"The economic downturn has greatly impacted families," said Crystal Parker, Program Supervisor. "What concerns us is when we learn that families are missing their doctor visits, watering down formula or reusing disposable diapers to stretch their limited resources. This is very unhealthy and dangerous. " Funding for the pantry comes largely from monetary donations, in-kind gifts and grants. Items that are always needed include:

• Diapers (sizes newborn to 5)

• Formula (Similac Advance)

• Baby jar foods (fruits & vegetables - stages 1 & 2)

• Baby wash, baby lotion, A&D ointment, powder and other hygiene items

• Baby nipples (sizes newborn, 3-6 months, 6-9 months)

• Baby bottles and cleaning brushes

• Newborn onesies, blankets, booties, hats and one-piece pajamas
